Big Canoe is a gated
community, located on the borders of Dawson and Pickens counties in the
North Georgia Mountains. The entire community is nestled between seven
mountains, and encompasses nearly 8000 acres. It has several lakes, a boat
marina, a swim club with beach and 2 outdoor pools, community chapel,
state-of-the-art fitness center with indoor pool, tennis club, hiking and
jeep trails, a scout hut, organized youth and adult sports, children's
playground, ball field, basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball field,
wildflower meadows with walking trails, dozens of community organizations
(garden club, woodcarvers, wildflower group, sowing club, hiking club,
fishing clubs, artist association and dozens more - all adding to the
community feel of Big Canoe), 3 restaurants, 27 holes of golf, golf
clubhouse, country store and gas station, animal rescue organization,
private fire dept., community maintained roads, a private security force,
and its own very professional newspaper - all of this within the community
gates. Outside the gates is the nearby Foothills Shopping & Grocery center
which services the community. I could go on and on, but I will close with
the following - Big Canoe is basically a self supporting community region,
offering many (or more) of the cultural benefits one might expect in a north
Atlanta suburb, yet with the peaceful natural surroundings of the mountains,
