Welcome to our New Jekyll Island Section!
My name is David, and I am the Owner of this website. As I write
this, I have just returned from my 48th year of vacationing at Jekyll
Island. My family started the annual tradition of having summer
vacations on the Island when I was just a baby. I've stayed everywhere
here over the years, from the Campgrounds, to the Hotels, Condos, Townhomes,
and Small Private Homes to Luxury Beachfront Homes. And while the
accommodations always change - the Island does not, and remains the Golden
Isle of my heart.
The links above have much more
information, but let me give you a quick overview of the Island.
Once upon a time, Jekyll Island was the
vacation spot of the Richest Families in America. The Rockefellers,
Goodyears, Pulitzers, Carnegies, Morgans & Vanderbilts, to name a few, built
vacation homes on the Island in the late 1800's. They created the
Jekyll Island Club, which was a central Hotel & Resort to entertain all
their rich and famous friends. This Historic District as been fully
restored, and is a marvelous step back into history. If you visit the
Island, a tour of the area is recommended - or do as I do, and simply wander/bike
around and enjoy the fabulous architecture and landscaping. It's a
really awesome setting, and it is no accident that it was Jekyll Island that
these great families chose to call their Vacation Retreat.
In the mid 1900's the Island was
purchased by the State of Georgia, and remains owned by the State today.
Development is very limited, keeping the Island an unspoiled natural
paradise for most intents. The Beaches are pristine, backing up to
beautiful Dunes. Bicycle paths are everywhere. The fishing and
crabbing is spectacular. There is a Tennis Center & 72 Holes of Golf.
There are loads of great restaurants on the Island. The Sea Turtle
Center & Tidelands Center offer great eco-adventures and are a children's
favorite. There is a convention center for large gatherings. The
Island is home to the State's largest 4-H Center & has an Oceanside Soccer
Complex. Short Ocean Cruises, Boat Rentals, Kayaking, Dolphin Tours &
Deep Sea Fishing are available. A few years back they broke tradition, and
actually allowed for the development of a Waterpark on the South side of the
Island. It's very unobtrusive, and yet I wasn't crazy about the
"touristy addition" it brought. But then we took the kids - and I must
admit, it is a very nice park - incredibly fun, and the kids absolutely adore it.
The Public Playground & adjoining Putt Putt Golf Center in the center of the
island are also great for outings with the kids. The Pizza & Ice Cream
Shops are also quite popular with my kids - LOL! (I will admit I am
quite fond of them myself!)
But it is the beaches, biking, long scenic walks and
peaceful relaxation that are my personal favorite. Yet there
is something here for everyone. As a child I made some incredible
memories here. Older now, I am making new memories with my own
children. I truly wish all of you who hear the call of this marvelous
paradise a blessed, peaceful & joyful visitation, and the beginning of many great memories for your
own family!
